The Rise of Skywalker, Episode IX, isn’t just the last film of the sequel trilogy but the last film of the Star Wars Saga that began in 1977 with George Lucas’ Star Wars: A New Hope.

The “Skywalker saga” refers to the 3 sets of trilogies of the Star Wars film series.

The movies from the original trilogy were released from 1977 to 1983. They primarily focus on the Rebel Alliance trying to free the galaxy from the Galactic Empire, as well as Luke Skywalker’s quest to become a Jedi and face Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The original trilogy is sometimes called the “classic trilogy” in contrast to the prequel trilogy (1999-2005) and the sequel trilogy ( 2015-2019).

Forever and Ever…

Each trilogy focuses on a generation of the Force-sensitive Skywalker family. The original trilogy depicts the heroic development of Luke Skywalker, the prequels tell the backstory of his father Anakin, while the star of the sequel is Luke’s nephew, Kylo Ren.

With the release of The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019, the original nine-film Star Wars saga comes to an end. As a story, Star Wars entries will continue on forever.
