Description
NFT Sustainability Manifesto T-Shirt: Use and Consume Responsibly
- The manifesto encourages people to use NFT technology responsibly.
- Its creators released the manifesto through one NFT, which they did not offer for sale. They minted it on Stratisphere, Stratis’s NFT marketplace. Stratis uses a Proof-of-Authority blockchain, which the project described as energy-efficient.
- Treedom planted a tree to help neutralise the carbon emissions linked to this NFT. The project described the token’s carbon footprint as small.
On 16 March 2022, Paolo Taticchi launched the NFT Sustainability Manifesto. Taticchi teaches corporate sustainability at UCL School of Management. He wanted to raise awareness of both the opportunities and environmental risks that NFTs can bring to companies.
The manifesto promotes responsible use of the technology behind NFTs. To share its message, the team created one NFT and did not put it up for sale. The project also aimed to show how companies can approach new technology with care.
NFTs can create new opportunities. However, some blockchain systems use significant energy and produce carbon emissions. So companies should understand the technology before they adopt it. They should also consider its environmental effects and possible risks to their reputation.
The Artwork and Its Message
Paolo Taticchi first conceived the NFT. Then NFT designer Michele Fabbro and Italian artist Massimiliano Donnari, known as “MAMO”, created it with him. The artwork portrays Queen Elizabeth II as a royal influencer. She wears a top that features the Earth and the words: “NFT – use and consume responsibly”.
MAMO said he chose one of his popular queens for the project. He drew inspiration from Queen Elizabeth II’s leadership and from the influence of figures such as Italian entrepreneur Chiara Ferragni. As a result, the artwork presents the Queen as an ambassador for the planet and the manifesto.
A More Considered Approach to NFTs
Viewers can access the NFT Sustainability Manifesto through a link in the token’s description. The manifesto sets out practices for companies that consider using this technology. It also asks organizations to weigh their sustainability goals against the environmental and reputational risks of NFTs.
Paolo Taticchi said he welcomed new technologies and felt positive about the future of NFTs. At the same time, he urged companies to understand the environmental impact and reputational risks. In his view, businesses should consider these issues as they pursue their sustainability goals. Therefore, the manifesto calls for responsible use of NFTs.
Chris Trew, then CEO of Stratis, explained how the platform’s Proof-of-Authority system works. A distributed group of nodes validates transactions without the energy-intensive mining used by some proof-of-work networks. Trew said Stratis aimed to balance decentralization with energy efficiency. He also argued that companies can explore NFTs while considering sustainability.
These statements describe the project and its creators’ views in 2022. Blockchain systems differ, and their energy use can change over time. For example, Ethereum moved from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in 2022, which sharply reduced its energy use. That example applies to Ethereum; it does not describe every blockchain. Likewise, the announced tree planting records the project’s goal to neutralize emissions. A tree planting alone does not prove that all emissions have been offset.
