Ayahuasca T-Shirt

Ayahuasca, also known as the tea, the vine, and la purga, is a blend of two plants: the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and a shrub called chacruna (Psychotria Viridis), which contains the hallucinogenic drug dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

First discover:

Evidence from pre-Columbian rock drawings suggests hundreds of years of ayahuasca use in the Amazon. Only in 1851 did British plant explorer, Richard Spruce discover the Tukanoan Indians in the Rio Negro region of the Brazilian Amazon using a liana (vine) known as caapi to induce a state of intoxication.

Ancient Amazonian tribes used this drink for spiritual and religious purposes; some religious communities in Brazil and North America still use it as a sacred beverage.

Traditionally, a shaman or curandero, an experienced healer who leads Ayahuasca ceremonies, prepares the brew by boiling torn leaves of the Psychotria Viridis shrub and stalks of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine in water.

The Banisteriopsis caapi vine is cleaned and smashed before being boiled to increase the extraction of its medicinal compounds.

When the brew has been reduced to the shaman’s liking, the water is removed and reserved, leaving behind the plant material.

This process is repeated until a highly concentrated liquid is produced. Once cooled, the brew is strained to remove impurities.

Effects of the “teacher plant”:

People who have consumed ayahuasca report having mystical experiences and spiritual revelations regarding their purpose on earth. They also got deep insights into the true nature of the universe and how to be the best person they can be.

This is viewed by many as a spiritual awakening and what is often described as a near-death experience or rebirth.

According to current research, Ayahuasca may protect brain cells and stimulate neural cell growth.

It may also boost mood, improve mindfulness, and treat depression and addiction disorders, though more research is needed to confirm these effects.

For centuries, South America’s indigenous societies have used this “teacher plant” in regular rituals.

The Shipibo-Konibo artworks

The Shipibo-Konibo are indigenous people, currently numbering only about 20,000, who live along the Ucayali River in the Amazon.

Their traditions are expressed in their shamanistic religion and in their visionary arts.

The Shipibo arts are known for labyrinthine geometric designs and psychedelic colour combinations consistent with ayahuasca visions. It is through these visions that the women begin the process of creating different hand-painted textiles.

in South, America ayahuasca is an integral part of some tribal societies. In 2008, Peru’s government recognised ayahuasca’s status, stating that it is “one of the basic pillars of the identity of the Amazon peoples”.

Peru’s government claimed that consumption of the “teacher” or “wisdom” plant “constitutes the gateway to the spiritual world and its secrets, which is why traditional Amazon medicine has been structured around the ayahuasca ritual”.
