Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Covid-19 is closely related to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

COVID-19 is different to other coronaviruses with around 80 per cent of cases leading to a mild infection. There may also be many people carrying the disease and displaying no symptoms, making it even harder to control.

So far, around 20 per cent of COVID-19 cases have been classed as “severe” and the current death rate varies between 0.7 per cent and 3.4 per cent depending on the location and, crucially, access to good hospital care.

The disease was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic.

According to media reports, COVID-19 affected more than 200 countries and territories with major outbreaks occurring in central China, Iran, Western Europe and the United States. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization characterised the spread of COVID-19 as a pandemic.
