The Topo Gigio Bar T-Shirt tells the story of a restaurant in Tuscany and the memories behind its name. Its story begins in London, then travels back to Italy.
In 1976, Sergio left London after working as a waiter for three years. He moved to Montecatini to work. One evening, the manager of a local bar and restaurant asked if Sergio wanted to buy the business. Sergio spoke with his brother, who was also working in Switzerland, and they decided to give it a try.
They agreed on a price towards the end of that summer. The restaurant was called “da Sergio,” just like its manager. To avoid confusion, the brothers chose a new name.
Why “Topo Gigio”?
While in London, Sergio had worked for a time at a restaurant near Soho called “Topo Gigio.” The name brought back memories of a place he had known and valued. So the brothers chose it for their new restaurant in Italy.
Today, the name also carries a personal link to the people and places that shaped Sergio’s life. The story is about more than a restaurant sign. It follows a move between countries, a family decision and the start of a new chapter.
A Love of Dante and the Divine Comedy
The product story also shares Sergio’s long-standing interest in Dante Alighieri’sDivine Comedy. He says that, since his school years with the Salesians, he has loved the work of the great Italian poet. After returning home, he devoted time to reciting it from memory in schools, theatres and villages across Tuscany.
